As Progressio launches its East Timor: Who Cares? campaign, we invite you to an address by leading East Timorese politician Fernanda Borges, who has dedicated her life to seeking justice for a poverty-stricken country still recovering from 25 years of illegal occupation and violence. Come and hear Fernanda address issues of justice from her war-torn country.

As a six-year-old, Fernanda Borges witnessed first hand the horrors of war. Now, three decades on, Fernanda, who has been dubbed the 'Iron Lady of East Timor' by media for her uncompromising stand for justice, is calling for individuals to be prosecuted and the payment of reparations to communities who suffered. Fernanda chairs the parliamentary committee for the Reception, Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Chega!) report, charged with ensuring the Timorese parliament discusses the report, which has specific recommendations for the UK government. 

'Reconciliation alone is not enough to heal the tragic memories of victims. Accountability and real recognition of past atrocities is necessary to repair the wounds so that reconciliation efforts can complete the healing process,' she says.

This event will be preceded by Progressio's AGM at 6pm.  All are welcome to attend.  After the address by Fernanda Borges there will be an opportunity to ask questions, followed by a drinks reception.
